Design & Style Advice: Summer Trends

With a brand new season, comes new styles and trends we have been noticing here at MorningPrint. We cover everything from bold new colors to gradients in this article.

Bold Colors: Yellow-Orange-Red

With Summer just around the corner, MorningPrint is seeing an increase in bold colored business cards. Specifically in yellow, shades of orange and a rich red. The color with the most variation is orange.

Orange ranges from golden yellow-orange to the color of an orange peel to tangerine. Although it first began appearing back in February, Orange is looking to be the surprise break-out color of the season, because of it’s ability to be both eye catching and professional. It works when used in small touches throughout the card, or be the main color of a business cards.

Patterns

From the start of 2018, we have seen an increase in business cards featuring patterns in their designs. The pattern itself is usually the focus of the business card. The color palettes are selected based on what will make the pattern appear more obvious. For example, a bolder pattern may feature one to two colors. The colors will be selected to create enough contrast to emphasize the pattern. For example, the green and white vertically striped Linen card.

A softer pattern may involve more colors, but they will all be within the same color range, for example, the Heavy Nouveau with Round Corners.

Within the pattern trend is a growing popularity with vertical stripes. Bold and classic, vertical stripes are appearing more and more within business cards.
Retro Designs

Retro designs are a perfect fit for Summer because they are usually fun and reflects both soft and louder colors. At MorningPrint, we have noticed that a softer feeling design or a detailed design (such as the pink Silky Matte pictured above) tends to have a softer color palette. However, simpler designs tend to incorporate a bolder color palette.

We have also noticed that retro designs can also easily combine with another recent design trend, geometric shapes (such as in the top card of Standard Coated 14pt Matte pictured above) to create a retro look which also feels trendy.

Gradients and Depth

Last year, minimalist and flat 2-dimensional designs had a surge in popularity. Starting with Summer, we are seeing a return back to designs with depth. This depth can be achieved with shadow, or raised finishing options such as Raised Ink and Embossing. However, other times it can also be achieved through another design trend, a gradient.
Like in the business card pictured above, a gradient can be used to show depth or

Movement

Summer Styles and Trends Movement

The final design trend for Summer can best be described as a sense of movement. Many designs are now featuring elements or papers that seem to dance under a certain lighting.
The most used option is Hologram Foiling, Hologram Paper or Hologram Plastic. The movement of the rainbow coloring as the light hits the hologram tends to give the business card a sense of movement.

Premium Papers

A common misunderstanding for Premium Paper is that each option under this category is a thick business card. While we do offer a range of thicknesses for this category, they are labelled as premium because they are imported from Europe. MorningPrint imports these papers from a company named Gmund am Tegernsee located in Gmund, Germany. Each of the papers from Gmund have their own unique appearances and characteristics.

Premium Papers Heavy Nouveau

New Products: Hologram Paper and Hologram Plastic Business Cards

Announcing our newest products, Hologram Paper and Hologram Plastic Business Cards.

About Hologram Paper:
Hologram Paper is a creamy white paper with a hologram coating on both sides. The hologram has all the colors of the rainbow, just like our other hologram products, Hologram Plastic and Hologram Plus Plastic. However, compared to them, the hologram is much softer.

Hologram Photograph

The hologram will be especially noticeable against dark backgrounds and dark colors.
This paper is especially good at printing photographs, but keep in mind that these photographs will have hologram finish placed on top of them.

Hologram Dark Background

At 14pt, which is the standard thickness of a business card, however Hologram Paper feels a little thicker in your hand due to it’s hologram coating. The coating also ensures that it will be durable and not easily torn.
To view the hologram on our paper business cards, click here

About Hologram Plastic:
Like our other plastic business cards, Hologram Plastic is made of PET plastic, which is a recyclable plastic. It is quite thin, being the same thinness as the plastic of a water bottle.
This plastic is made with a sharp, gridlock pattern of hologram on both sides of the plastic. The hologram pattern is similar to the pattern of our Hologram Plus Plastic.

Hologram Plastic

Instead of having a white rectangle, like what is found on Hologram Plus Plastic, the Hologram Plastic has custom white ink. The custom white ink can be placed wherever it is necessary in the design. However, it is important to note that the hologram is quite strong and can show slightly through the white ink.

MorningPrint has several environmentally friendly options to choose from in both our paper and plastic selections. Ranging in color, texture and material, they each have their own characteristics.

1. Vintage Kraft

Eco-friendly Business Cards and Stickers Vintage Kraft

Vintage Kraft

Vintage Kraft is made of recycled paper pulp creating eco-friendly paper for business cards. Since it is made of recycled pulp, at times it is possible to feel a hairy texture on this paper. It also has a rich brown color, similar to the color of cardboard. Due to its dark coloring, black prints the best of all the other color choices.

Vintage Kraft Stickers

We have also turned Vintage Kraft into a sticker, becoming one of the two eco-friendly sticker options from MorningPrint. It is also possible to choose this paper for both our post card sizes, 4×6 and 5×7.
An excellent finishing option choice for this business card is Foiling.

Aquarelle with Raised Ink

A matte, creamy white textured paper Aquarelle and it’s thicker partner Heavy Aquarelle are another option for eco-friendly business cards. Both have received a certificate with a five star rating from the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) saying these papers meet their standards for forest management. As a watercolor paper, both absorb color well and reflect watercolor designs the best.
Aquarelle is available in our postcard sizes 4×6 and 5×7.
Our favorite finishing option to pair with this paper is Raised Ink.

3. Yupo

Eco-friendly Business Cards and Stickers Yupo

Yupo

Yupo is a creamy white synthetic paper, which makes it an eco-friendly business card. Ironically, it does not have natural paper feel as it is cool to the touch and quite smooth.
At 9pt it is also our thinnest paper selection for environmentally friendly business cards. However, it is also our most durable because it is both waterproof and tear proof.
This paper was also made into a sticker, called Durable Sticker, for our strongest sticker and second eco-friendly sticker option.

Tips to Keep in Mind When Designing a Business Card

Creating the right business card for your business is not a simple task. It is not just about creating a unique design, it has to be the right design which not only represents your business, but will also serve it’s purpose of carrying information. Here are some tips from MorningPrint of what to keep in mind when designing your business card.

business card design blue saint james

Make Your Information the Star
Keep your information the focal point of your design by incorporating large fonts. Make sure the coloring is not too subtle, so that it stands out from the background. We also recommend using simple, crisp fonts over fancy or complicated ones. By keeping the text information the focal point of your card, you are ensuring that your information is successfully passed on through your business card. If you must use a smaller or thinner font, then we strongly recommend using stamped Foiling on your text to ensure legibility.

Research before you buy
Each printing company has their own requirements for submitting files for printing. However, most printing companies use CMYK ink. Therefore, your design should be set to CMYK color settings.
You should also keep in mind that commercial printers require a good quality printing file. That means the resolution of your design should be set to at least 300 dpi. A low quality printing file leads to bad prints jobs, like blurriness.

Try incorporating your branding into your card
Integrating your company’s brand into your business card is an easy way to promote your company’s message. You can do this by using the company colors or by using a certain font of your text. If you have the space, you can also incorporate small design elements that will accentuate your information. For example, the above card is for a beauty salon and they incorporate lips into their business card.

Have a reason to use special effects
Every so often we get a client who wants to use Foiling, Spot UV, and Embossing all on one side of their design. It seems to be a common misconception that the more special effects used makes your card more special. The opposite is actually true. Too many special effects can be distracting from the information of your business card.

Follow the example for the business card above, which is for a graphic designer. He has Black Paper, which only allows foiling for his information. Since his text is foiled, he used a smaller font. And he kept the main focus on his laser cut logo. It is simple and natural.

Rely on the material itself
If you stay patient and use your time researching the different products that we offer, you will able to pick up on which type of paper or plastic is best suited to your design.
For example the above card uses Heavy Nouveau paper with Bronze Foiling, Blind Press Embossing and a Hole Punch. But when you look at the card, you are still able to see the elegant, creamy white characteristics of the paper.

What You Need to Know: Sumo Nouveau

Sumo Nouveau belongs to the same paper family as Nouveau and Heavy Nouveau because it is created using Heavy Nouveau cards. Therefore, it has the same luxuriousness and bright white as that paper stock. This paper also maintains the ability to carry any type of style or design with ease, because like it’s other family members, it is a blank slate. To read more in depth about the qualities of this paper family, please refer to our article Nouveau and Heavy Nouveau: The Blank Slate.

Sumo Nouveau Floral
It is also possible to visibly see the smoothness of this paper, more so than it’s family members. Sumo Nouveau requires 5-7 business days for production, not including finishing options or shipping.

However, the characteristic that sets Sumo Nouveau paper apart from the rest of it’s family, is it’s thickness. At 32 pt, Sumo Nouveau is thicker than a credit card. This means the paper is stiff and dense, making it impossible to bend your business card. As such, the edge of this thick business card is apparent, both visibly and tactilely.

Sumo Nouveau Eye

Due to it’s thickness, the paper’s ability to do finishing options gets affected. For example, foiling. Since foiling is stamped on, this finishing option is possible on both sides of the card. However, due to the stamping process, the weight of the pressure from the machine leaves a slight indentation into the foil design. The final result is similar to that of letterpress. In our experience, the wider the foiling design, the more obvious the indentation will be to the naked eye. We, at MorningPrint, have noticed that thin, black foiling can look quite artistic against Sumo Nouveau. Meanwhile, Glossy Gold, Glossy Silver and Bronze can emphasize the natural upscale and luxurious quality of the paper.

Sumo Nouveau Matte Silver

While we offer embossing as a possible finishing option, only debossing is available on this particular paper stock. Embossing is created when the machine uses pressure to imprint, leading to a deep indentation on one side of the card and a raised effect on the other. However, the thickness of the paper is too dense for the raised embossing to show on the other side, Therefore, this paper can only allow a deep indentation, with no result affecting the back of the card.

Sumo Nouveau Kitten

Despite Sumo Nouveau’s thickness, custom sizing and cutting is still possible. We offer our normal options of Standard, Australian, European and Slim for the size of the business card. In addition, Sumo Nouveau is able to do custom sizes, such as a 2×2 square.

Sumo Nouveau Square
On a related note, laser cutting is also available on this thick business card. Laser cutting is when we use a laser to cut any specific design into your card. It is highly customizable, and able to lead great results with this thick paper stock. Round corners and hole punching are possible as well.

Sumo Nouveau Hole Punch

Sumo Nouveau’s thickness coupled with it’s natural elegance and luxuriousness sets it apart from other business cards.

Die Cuts: The Most Customizable Cards

Here at MorningPrint we understand that each client has their own specific needs for their own business or work. Some require promotional papers, temporary sales announcements, or marketing material to place with products in store on in delivery packages. Others simply want a business card that has a shape all of it’s own.

Die Cut 3

For all such functions, we offer Die Cuts. Die Cuts are custom shaped cards made with our Standard Coated 14 pt Matte paper. Finishing options are available including Foiling and Spot UV. Die Cuts make for excellent business material because you can portray the business culture and still meet your practical needs whether it is for product display or business cards.
21369068_1633458400018303_7217675076258908130_o (1)
We currently offer 58 Standard Shapes, ranging from a a circle to a camera to a house. Realtors tend to prefer Shape 041, which most resembles a house. Photographers choose Shape 012, which most resembles a camera. Shape 008 resembles a price tag. For those who feel one of our shapes represents their individual business or industry well, you can just download the Photoshop or Illustrator template of the shape you want, and design from there.
21427463_1634087233288753_7981968761336692817_o (1)
A client can also use design to manipulate our shapes to represent what they want. Do you remember our Design of the Month: May 2017? This design was created by Shape 015 and Spot UV to create a box. Another example of this is Shape 019, which can be a water drop, or a pin depending on the design.

Die Cut 2

For those who want a completely custom shape created just for them, we can do that as well. Just create the shape and design you are want in a Photoshop or Illustrator file with a text safety zone and a cutting line. Please send in your designs to our customer service department at cs@morningprint.com for a custom quote. We can do a variety of sizes and even alter the paper that is used. In the past we have done die cuts on Nouveau paper.

Die Cut 6

A frequently asked question about our die cuts is whether a client will need to pay a set up fee. The answer is no. Unlike other companies, we do not charge a client a set up fee each time they order a die cut. They will only be charged for labor and materials.

Die Cut 7
Die Cuts are the most custom form of business card or business material anyone can purchase. They are invaluable to any business, fulfilling not just their functional goals, but also their marketing needs.
