What You Need to Know: Foiling

Foil business cards are one of the most popular requests clients make. However, within this finishing option alone, there are many ways to customize your design.

Foil Red

What is Foiling?
Foil is a shiny metal that adds a shiny, bold color to designated areas of your design. It can be used to highlight important information, such as a name, or used as a design element.
Foiling is a 2-D, flat finishing option. That means if you are looking for a finishing option which gives the illusion of depth, we would not recommend on relying on Foiling.

Foil Glossy Gold Border

How do you apply it?
This is still at least partly a manual process. We create a plate of your Foiling design and then someone manually places your order of cards into the machine. If your order is 200 cards, all 200 go in at once. Then we start the machine to stamp each card with your Foiling.
Since the machine relies on a person manually putting the entire order at once into the machine, it can lead to difficulty in predicting alignment outcome.

Can You Explain Oversize Foiling?
We have two different Foiling sizes, a Standard and Oversized. Standard sizing means that your Foiling will stay within 1.57x.79 inches (40×20 mm). Anything larger than this size will be considered Oversized. An Oversized Foiling design requires a bigger plate, which will increase the cost of producing the design.

Foil Glossy Silver Scattered

I only have a little bit of Foiling, how is it considered Oversized?
Since we use a plate to stamp your Foiling, if your Foiling goes outside the Standard sizing then we will need to create a bigger plate to accomplish your design. Therefore, it will still be considered Oversized, which will lead to an increase in price.
This happens quite often when a Foiling design is made up of small details, scattered across the card.

Foil Pink

Can I get Foiling going to the edge or close to the edge?
Yes
But this will be more expensive than a normal Oversized Foiling. Since Foiling is stamped on, the machine needs space to hold down the card to stamp the Foiling. If you have Foiling going all the way to the edge of a card, you may not leave any room for the machine to hold down the card. In this case, we need to use extra paper and even more Foiling to give the machine enough space to stamp the design onto the card. Then afterwards we will cut your cards down to your chosen size.
We recommend that you give enough time in your timeline to discuss your plan with our printing team before you place your order.

Foil Glossy Gold

How perfect is MorningPrint’s alignment?
Pretty perfect, but we can not guarantee it each time.
As we explained above, stamping on Foiling is still partly a manual process. Therefore if you want to have perfect alignment, we can not guarantee that it will exactly perfect. We will certainly do our best each time.

Foil Blue

Can MorningPrint add two Foiling colors on the card?
Yes
Having two different Foiling colors requires creating two different plates, to stamp the cards twice. Sometimes, a client wants to have two Foiling colors close together. This is possible, but keep in mind, you will need to take time speaking with the printing team to discuss any risk of misalignment. In the past we have achieved perfect alignment, but there is no guarantee it will be perfect for your order.

Foil Matte Gold Corner

What is the MorningPrint Foiling paper?
We do not have one specific Foiling paper. You can have Foiling on just about any of our over 50 different paper selections.
Some papers are more off white and creamy, like Nouveau, Heavy Nouveau, Sumo Nouveau, Aquarelle and Heavy Aquarelle. Off white papers naturally tend to be warmer.
If you choose to use Glossy Gold Foil, or Matte Gold Foil, you will be accentuating the off white and warm undertones, maybe to the point of looking a little yellow. If this is not your goal, but you would like to use one of these papers, we might recommend including a background color, or a design with multiple colors.
Other papers, like Silky Matte, Heavy Silky Matte, Linen and Heavy Linen, are a crisp, bright white. These cards will always look like a bright, matte white. If you use colder colors, like green and blue, then the card will ultimately look cold. This could be useful in more modern designs. If this is not your goal, but you want one of these papers, then we would recommend adding a background color or a design with multiple colors.

Foil Green

What Foiling colors do you offer?
Glossy Gold, Matte Gold, Glossy Silver, Matte Silver, Red, Blue, Green, Pink, Black, Bronze, Hologram and Pearl

Does MorningPrint color the Foiling?
No
Unlike other printers, we do NOT start with silver Foiling and paint it a color.

Will the color fade away?
No

Foil Matte Gold

What is Glossy Gold and what is Matte Gold Foiling?
Glossy Gold is highly reflective and is the exact color of yellow gold jewelry
Matte Gold has almost no shine, at certain angles it will have a slight glow. Matte Gold also tends to have an orange tint in it’s coloring.

Is the Hologram Foiling all the colors in the rainbow or is it selective (like just the blues or just the reds)?
In general, our Foiling shows the entire rainbow of colors.
However, we have noticed that if the design is narrow or made up of thin lines, it can be harder to see the full rainbow. In this instance, the Hologram Foiling looks more like a range of blues.

Getting into Sticker Details

Stickers Matte Gold with Blue and Pink

Left to right: Uncoated Square Round Corner, Coated with Matte Gold Foiling, and Coated Rectangle Round Corner

Some time ago MorningPrint did an introductory article called Stickers which described each sticker we offer. It is a good introductory piece to all our sticker collection. If you have not read it, we recommend doing so before proceeding with this article.

Stickers Thank You

Left to right: Clear Circular with Glossy Gold Foiling, Uncoated Circular, Uncoated

What are the actual differences between Uncoated and Coated Stickers? What is the coating? Is there a shine?
-Both Uncoated and Coated stickers are made with the same kind of smooth paper. The only real difference between both of them is that one is coated, while the other is not. But this coating does lead to differing characteristics for each sticker, even though they are made with the same kind of paper.

-An Uncoated Sticker has no coating. It is a true matte sticker, without any shine or reflective qualities. Without any coating, there is also no protection against moisture, the weather or tearing. The original color of this sticker is a crisp, bright white, which makes any color pop. This sticker also has the ability to have very saturated colors.

-A Coated Sticker is the made of the same type of paper as the uncoated sticker, except it also has a laminate coating. This laminate coating has a high shine while making the sticker tear resistant. The coating also gives it some protection against moisture and the weather. While it has the same bright white of the original paper, the coating will make any printed ink more saturated.

Stickers Cluster

Clockwise: Uncoated Square Round Corner, Uncoated, Coated with Matte Gold Foiling, Coated with Green Foiling

How large can the stickers be?
MorningPrint offers standard sizing from 2.36 x 1.96 inches to 3.54 x 5.90 inches. However if any of your designs are outside these standard sizing, then we can print those as well.

Stickers Pink Cluster

Clockwise: Coated with Matte Gold Foiling, Coated with Glossy Gold Foiling, Clear Circular, and Uncoated Circular

Is Foiling possible on stickers?
Yes, Foiling is possible on most of our stickers. We are also able to do Oversized Foiling on our stickers. The sticker options which do not allow Foiling are Metal, Hologram and Vintage Kraft Stickers.
Not all of our Foiling colors are available to do on Stickers. The following Foiling colors are able to be added to our stickers:
Glossy Gold, Matte Gold, Glossy Silver, Matte Silver, Blue, Red, Green, Black, and Hologram
– Watch a video of Matte Gold Foil on a Coated Sticker
– Watch a video of Glossy Gold Foiling on a Clear Circular Sticker
– Watch a video of Glossy Silver Foiling on a Clear Sticker

Stickers Vintage Kraft

Left to right: Clear with Glossy Silver Foiling, Uncoated Circular, Coated and Vintage Kraft

Eco-friendly Stickers
MorningPrint offers a selection of environmentally friendly stickers. They each have their own characteristics.
Vintage Kraft Stickers is made with recycled paper, making it completely eco-friendly. By being made of recycled paper, Vintage Kraft Stickers have a natural light brown color.

Durable Stickers are made of Yupo, a synthetic paper, which makes it water proof and tear proof. Durable stickers are more of a creamy white coloring, and completely matte. To view the effects of water on a Durable Sticker, click here.

Stickers Blue and White

Left to right: Uncoated with Matte Gold Foiling, and Coated

Clear Stickers are completely clear, like our PET plastic business cards. Our stickers are made of pp material, which is an environmentally friendly plastic. These stickers are highly reflective. These stickers can also be placed facing a car window, but your design will need to be inverse.

Silver PET is made of a PET material, which is an environmentally friendly plastic. The Silver PET has a light gray coloring with a slight reflective quality.

-Gold PET is also made of a PET material, an environmentally friendly plastic. It is only
available with our custom shape sticker.

Stickers Red and Black Foiling

Left to right: Uncoated with Red Foiling and Uncoated Circular with Black Foiling

One of our most frequent inquiries is what kind of sticker has the best tolerance to the weather?
The answer really depends on what you want the sticker to be used for and what kind of resistance you are looking for

If your priority is the paper part of the sticker itself, you should consider our Durable Sticker. Since it is made of Yupo Paper, it is both tear proof and water proof. That means the ink will not run if it gets affected by water, ensuring a perfect design.
For example, if you want it to go onto products which will be around humidity and water, like a shampoo bottle, we recommend our Durable Sticker.
Here is a video of a durable sticker being placed under water.

If the sticker is meant to be a label on a package, then we recommend Strong Adhesive Sticker. It is extra strength glue. Keep in mind the actual paper of the sticker will be our Uncoated stock.

If you want to use the sticker as a sign and just want the most use, then a good combination is Strong Adhesive Sticker and add the Coated Sticker glossy coating: The strongest glue with some protection against the elements.

What You Need to Know Stickers Gold Sticker

What is the Latest News on Stickers?
MorningPrint now offers Gold Stickers. However, it is only available with our Shaped Stickers. It will be one of the products listed that you can choose from. It is a PET sticker, meaning that it is also environmentally friendly.

New Product: Foil Edge Business Cards

With great pleasure we wish to announce our newest products, Foil Edge Business Cards. Available in colors Gold and Silver, Foil Edge Business Cards are by far, the most requested new product of this year. Two of the most important production details for this brand new product are the following:
1. Production of Foil Edge business cards is only 3-4 business days, not including delivery.
2. Most post processing options, such as embossing and foiling (on the front and back of the card) will not be possible on this product. However, punches and laser cutting will be possible

Foil Edge Gold and Silver

Foil Edge business cards are automatically processed using our Heavy Nouveau paper. Heavy Nouveau is a thicker business card with it’s natural paper texture and creamy white coloring. Now if you prefer a different type of paper to be used for your Foil Edge business cards, there are additional paper options of  Heavy Linen, Heavy Silky Matte and Heavy Star Dream. However, one must request these papers to be used in their order instead of Heavy Nouveau.

Since Heavy Nouveau is a little thicker, heavier and more rigid than a standard business card, it is able to reflect the Foil Edge better than other papers. The Foil Edge is even visible on an individual card. But, it is important to know that while the Foil Edge is visible on an individual card, it is not as apparent as when the cards are in a stack. The reason for this is not because of a lack of quality, it is because this is paper.

Foil Edge Individual Gold

Also, it should be known that Gold Foil Edge is more visible than the Silver Foil Edge. This is only because the Silver Foil Edge is close to the color of the paper, while Gold has a tendency to stand out a little more. This does not mean that Silver Edge Foil is nonexistent, it just means that depending on the light and the colors that is chosen to print on the cards, it can look as though the Silver Foil Edge blends with the paper a little more.

What You Need to Know: Matte Papers

MorningPrint’s most popular matte papers are Nouveau, Heavy Nouveau, Linen, Heavy Linen, Silky Matte, Heavy Silky Matte. Matte paper business cards are the preferred business card for those who would like an organic feel to their cards.

Matte Papers

1. What characteristics does matte paper have?
Matte paper refers to the natural state of the paper, with no added shine or gloss. Since matte business cards rely on the actual paper, designs should be made keeping the different matte paper characteristics in mind.

2. Matte paper may or may not include texture or pattern
Some prefer matte paper with no pattern, but this is not a standard characteristic of matte papers. There are papers, such as Linen and Heavy Linen which have pattern or texture and still have matte paper characteristics.

Matte Papers Silky Matte

Silky Matte with Glossy Gold Foiling

Silky Matte & Heavy Silky Matte
Silky Matte and Heavy Silky Matte are our smoothest matte paper business cards. These cards are smooth without being slippery giving it an overall soft feel without a coating or gloss. The natural roughness of the paper is simply flattened out. These papers have a natural crisp white coloring, creating a cool feel as a background for your design.

Matte Papers Heavy Linen

Heavy Linen with Glossy Gold Foiling

Linen & Heavy Linen
Linen and Heavy Linen have a woven pattern texture and the brightest white. These matte business cards tend to pop the colors in the design due to the bright white background. The pattern is more apparent on the Linen paper because it is thinner. The thinness also gives it a fresher feel. However, Heavy Linen’s thickness and rigidity tends to give it a more authoritative and high end look.

Matte Papers Heavy Nouveau with Raised Ink

Heavy Nouveau with Raised Ink

Nouveau & Heavy Nouveau
Nouveau and Heavy Nouveau is a creamy white with no texture or smoothness. One of the purest matte papers we offer, Nouveau and Heavy Nouveau adapts well to any design, adding it’s natural elegance to any design.

We provide logo (brand identity), menu, business cards, event flyer design and more! This particularly wedding-invitation set was done for a bar consultant colleague and his fiance.Design of the Month March 2018 Save the Date Back
  6. What was the goal of your design?
The wedding invitations we did for Sarah and Aaron were meant to capture the spirit of their celebration in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The textures and colors pull directly from the buildings and flowers of the city. The map on the backside is an abstract representation of the location and energy of the wedding festivities.
  7. Why did you choose the Standard Coated papers?
They are a true matte finish with durability and great ink absorption. Colors are always very vivid and rich!Design of the Month March 2018 Map Back
  8. Our favorite part of your design is the map on the back of the Parade Card. How did you create that effect for the back of the card?
The map was created from a rough sketch of a city map that was altered in proportions to include all the wedding festivities. The affects and textures were created using watercolor and paint brushes in Adobe Illustrator. The couple asked for special elements such as the bride and groom, plants and flowers and their two pups. These tiny details made the map feel truly customized and special.Design of the Month March 2018 Save the Date
  9. We have never seen a black wedding never seen a black wedding invitation set, and yet it works beautifully. How did you decide on the color pattern, including Matte Gold Foil of the invitation and parade card?
The couple wanted a richness and colorful celebratory mood to their wedding invitation set. Matte Gold Foil was an absolute must to give the invitation a little bit of polish. The colors come naturally from the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel cathedral and surrounding architecture of the city of San Miguel de Allende. The black seemed like a no-brainer that gave this invitation a rich contrast and helped make it feel more personal, more like them and less like other wedding invitations you see.Design of the Month March 2018 Invitation
  10. What made you choose MorningPrint?
I’ve used Morning Print for the last 5-6 years. Their paper quality is the main reason that I love them, plus the ability for metallic foils and spot UV. They are absolutely my go to for an affordable and beautiful business card or flyer.
  11. How was your experience with MorningPrint? Would you recommend us to others?
My experience was great. I did have some difficulty uploading larger files to their website (the wedding map file) but was able to dropbox them to their team, and they added the files to my order.
Yes, I would definitely recommend MorningPrint.

What You Need to Know: Frosty Plastic

Frosty Plastic is our plastic with the fastest production timeline. It only takes two business days for stamping the foiling on and an additional two business days for delivery.

Frosty Plastic is environmentally friendly
Like the majority of our plastic products, Frosty Plastic is made of PET material. PET plastic is an environmentally friendly material. It is the same material that water bottles are made from. Some of it’s characteristics include being quite thin, light weight, and flexible.

IMG_20180212_134749_575

Frosty means it is not crystal clear
The part of the name ‘Frosty’ has been confusing to some clients. Some believe there is a possibility it has a tint of white ink, which is not true (or possible). In fact, Frosty Plastic is a clear plastic business card. However, rather than being crystal clear, like looking through a window, it is blurry. As a transparent card, Frosty Plastic can only accommodate single sided designs.
Click here to view the blurry transparent quality of our Frosty Plastic

Only one Foiling color is possible in Frosty Plastic (that means no ink printing)

Another point of confusion for those interested in these cards is that Frosty Plastic can only print one color of foiling. That means your whole design will be done in the foiling you pick. As such, ink printing, gradients and shading are not possible in this product.

Wide Foiling Areas are Prone to Fading Away
Wide or large foiling designs are at a high risk of oxidation. Oxidation means that the foiling is peeling off the plastic stock. The peeling will reveal the transparent plastic stock underneath. It will look worn out as if the cards are old and worn from use.
If you must have a wide foiling area, our printing team will need to review your file and discuss the risk with you before printing.

Screenshot_20180213-093047

Thinner and Smaller Design Elements are Welcomed
Normally, we try to warn clients that by using thin and small design elements and fonts their information could be difficult to see and read, especially on our Clear Plastic (No White Ink). However, our foiling is stamped on, and the colors of the foiling can not be altered. Therefore we can guarantee legibility for smaller and thinner design elements, even against the transparent background of the Frosty Plastic.

What You Need to Know: Economy Paper

We have a few options in our Economy Paper, varying in thicknesses and coatings. We assembled a few important points that are Need to Knows for our Economy Paper options. Here is a list of the available paper options:
Standard Uncoated 10pt
Standard Coated (10pt Matte)
Glossy Heavy Weight (UV Coated)
Standard Coated 14pt glossy
Standard Coated 14pt Matte
Standard Coated 20pt Matte: Thickest paper of the economy papers. The 2nd thickest paper of our entire stock

Economy Matte Silver

Standard Uncoated: The original paper stock
There is no coating on this particular option meaning the paper has a natural look and feel. It is a bright, crisp white and in this particular paper option, fairly thin.

Economy Red

What is our Standard Coating?
Our Standard Coating smooths out the the paper, removing any roughness from it. Depending on your personal preference of soft, it can be considered as a soft feeling paper. Due to the coating, the paper will not have a natural appearance or feel. It will look and feel much smoother and a little soft. The paper itself is matte with a crisp white coloring.

Economy Embossing

Standard Coating does NOT affect Finishing Options
Despite the Standard Coating, a majority of the finishing options are possible on these papers: Foiling, Embossing, Laser Cutting, and Hole Punching. Neither hole punching or embossing will crack the coating at any time. Laser cutting will not destroy the coating with it’s heat.

Economy Laser Cutting

Standard Coated 14pt Glossy & Glossy Heavy Weight
Standard Coated 14pt Glossy gives the brightest shine and richest printed color compared to the the other Economy Papers. It has two coatings; the first being our Standard Coating for a smooth touch, and the second coating for extra shine. Since the original paper for Standard Coated 14pt Glossy is a crisp white, the colors tend to show more.

Glossy Heavy Weight has the one layer of UV coating. It is quite reflective and does shine, but not as much as Standard Coated 14pt Glossy. The final color printing is saturated, especially when compared to matte papers. Apart from the shine, the actual paper itself is an off white cream based paper.

Economy Pink Foiling
Standard Coated 14pt Matte can do Spot UV
One of our most popular combinations is to have a matte paper with a select design area done in a shiny coating, revealing the printed design underneath. Standard Coated 14pt Matte paper with Spot UV provides one of the best final results for that type of design. Spot UV lies flat so it is visible to the eye but not possible to feel. Spot UV can be done on both sides of Standard Coated 14pt Matte.
