Design & Style Advice: Spot UV

Depends a lot on what type of final design you would like to have
Keep in mind, there is absolutely no difference to the instructions of how to upload a Spot UV file.

blind spot uv vs ink spot uv

Use it for text

Spot UV is excellent to create a wide background design on the card. How you want that background design to be incorporated into the business card can go in two separate main ways.
1. Notice the text first, the Spot UV second:
2. Notice the Spot UV first, the text second:
This will look almost as though

Honeycomb
Honeycomb can extend across the background of the card
A popular pattern with Spot UV is a honeycomb pattern. This pattern is paired with this finishing option the most out of all other choices.

Create the logo with Spot UV
The logo with Spot UV will make you more eye-catching.

Geometric Design
When you have geometric designs on your business card, Spot Uv can make it a more 3D look on it.

How do I add depth to my design using Spot UV?
Depending on illustration and Spot UV design, your business card can have depth
This works especially well with illustrations. An illustration across one side of the card can set up the basis for depth.

White Spot UV?
There is no white Spot UV. All Spot UV is transparent. However, since the Spot UV is transparent, if you apply it over the card with no ink printed color underneath (blind Spot UV), and achieve the same “white Spot UV” look. If you wish to emphasize this aspect of your card, add a background color to every part except the Spot UV area.

What printed colors should I use?
Spot UV looks good against any type of coloring, but the look that works best for your design depends on what you want the final look to be.
-Most Spot UV designs MorningPrint receives have dark printed colors.
-Light, neutral colors tend to have a more subtle Spot UV because it is transparent.
-Spot UV looks good against the light, bright colors as well

5. Please give us a brief history of your business and some of the services you provide.
Hi! My name is Caitlyn Humphreys, and I work as a freelance animator and illustrator! I also own my own etsy store, where I sell enamel pins!

6. What was the inspiration for your design?
For my branding, I’ve been using concept art from my film, Brambles- it’s one of my favourite illustrations, and the colour scheme suits me quite well. It has a good ‘feeling’, I feel like the piece appeals to people, so they remember my card and are interested in picking it up when I’m at conventions.

7. We get many questions about our Spot UV. Would you like to share your opinion about the final result of the Spot UV?
I love Spot UV for creating depth in illustrations! The difference in colour between coated printing was on coated paper, so I wanted to try a variation that used Spot UV selectively.
Coated paper really makes darker colours pop, but I like how lighter colours are in uncoated paper, so Spot UV gives me the best of both worlds. I love how it turned out!
I’ve also used Spot UV a few times in other projects as well to create ‘invisible’ elements, that are present in Spot UV and not present in the actual printed design, and I love how interactive the experience of looking at the card becomes – it kind of feels a little more like a secret shared between the giver and receiver of the card. 😉

8. What do you think of the Standard Coated 14pt Matte paper? Do you like the soft touch feeling?
I love it! The contrast between it and Spot UV is fantastic.

9. How did you choose Hologram Foiling over Silver?
I wanted silver, but I wanted it to have a little more pizazz! The different colours you can find in the foil makes it more fun for the person who has your business card, which encourages them to interact with it more!

10. What is your favorite part of your business card?
I love how the illustration turned out with the Spot UV

11. What made you choose MorningPrint?
Your huge range of options Many places only offer gold silver foiling, and you have an enourmouse variety of options, and each is very clearly laid out! It makes it easy to know what is achievable, and what you should plan for in your design. Also your turnaround is fantastic! Thank you for all your hard work.

12. How was your experience with MorningPrint? Would you recommend us to others?
Of course! I already have 😉

What You Need to Know: The Difference Between Raised Ink and Spot UV

Our custom center and phone calls tend to ask similar questions regarding Spot UV and Raised Ink. Many assume these two different techniques are the same thing, when the truth is, they are not.

What is Spot UV?
Spot UV is a glossy, transparent lamination that lies flat on the designated portions of your text or design.
Spot UV is created by applying a glossy clear coating . We use a UV light to dry the Spot UV instantly.

Can I have a raised Spot UV?
There is no raised Spot UV. Continue reading because you could be looking for Raised Ink.

Differences Between Raised Ink and Spot UV Red Spot UV

What is Raised Ink?
Raised Ink is a raised glossy transparent material which is placed over designated portions of text or design. Raised Ink can be clearly seen and felt.
Raised Ink is created by placing powder on designated portions of the design and text. The card with the powder then passes through a heater which causes the Raised Ink to turn into a transparent, glossy, raised gel.

Is your Raised Ink actually raised?
Yes it is.

Differences Between Raised Ink and Spot UV Raised Ink Colorful

Can I have colored Raised Ink or Spot UV?
Raised Ink and Spot UV are both transparent material. They do not bring color into your design or text. However, you can print your colorful design/text with ink with Raised Ink or Spot UV placed over the colorful design/text. The transparency of both Spot UV and Raised Ink will allow the printed color to shine through.

Can I have Raised Ink or Spot UV on both sides of my card?
Raised Ink can only be done on a single side of a card.
Spot UV is able to be placed on both sides of the card.

What paper choices do I have for Raised Ink or Spot UV?
Raised Ink is available on many paper choices, with the most commonly choices being Heavy Nouveau, Heavy Linen, Heavy Silky Matte, and Vintage Kraft.  All paper business card choices EXCLUDING for the following: All Coated Stocks, Cameleon, Yupo, Sumo Nouveau, Sandwich Cards.
Spot UV only comes on a single paper choice, Standard Coated 14pt Matte.

Differences Between Raised Ink and Spot UV Green Spot UV

Will Spot UV or Raised Ink crack or break?
No, our finishing options are durable and can withstand wear and tear.

Can I have both Spot UV and Raised Ink?
No, because they are not possible on the same papers.

How will Raised Ink or Spot UV affect the colors on my card?
Since both Raised Ink and Spot UV are transparent, you will be able to view the printed colors underneath the lamination. But, because both these finishing options are glossy, the colors could appear slightly darker because they will be more saturated compared to the rest of the card.

What is Raised Ink or Spot UV used for?
Most people use them on their texts. But Raised Ink and Spot UV can be used to create designs. They can also be used to draw attention to a design element, let’s say a red circle.

Differences Between Raised Ink and Spot UV Orange Raised

How do I tell you where to put the Raised Ink or Spot UV?
The short answer is: Through your design files. However, the instructions change slightly depending on which design method you are using on our website.

-If you choose ‘Customize Designs’ (our Self Design tool)
This method is for those who do not have design programs, or only part of their design completed (like just their logo).
Once you choose this method you will be sent to our online template. Simply fill in your text and arrange the layout to look the way you wish. Make sure to upload any picture using the ‘Image’ button right above the template. When you finish, continue following the instructions until you reach the Finishing Options page. Make sure to select specific finishing option you want: Spot UV or Raised Ink. In that same section you will be able to specify what should have Spot UV or Raised Ink.
If you are selecting Spot UV, you can also select Single or Double Sided.

-If you choose ‘Upload a Complete Design’ (for someone who has a completed design file)
You will be submitting two design files. One labelled “Printing file” and another labelled “Raised Ink file” or “Spot UV file”.
On the ‘Printing File’ you will be putting everything that you want to have ink printed (this includes all colors and black/gray). On the ‘Raised Ink file’ or ‘Spot UV file’ you will be showing in an all black design what you would like done in Raised Ink or Spot UV. Make sure that the Raised Ink or Spot UV files align with the Printing file.
*If you are going to do double sided Spot UV, then you will be submitting a total of 4 files.

Wedding Stationery: Special Touches

Hello there,

It is Ava and I’m here to talk about how you can add special touches to your wedding stationery using the latest trends. Let’s get started.

Wedding Invitation Blue
1. Monograms are a big hit. You can use our Metal Stickers to create a personalized monogram to decorate all your wedding invitations. Metal Stickers come in two colors, gold and silver. Intricate, delicate designs really stand out on this material. With such a strong adhesion, they can be applied to just about anything such as menu cards, invitations, etc.

2. Custom shaped papers, called Die Cuts, are becoming a must have for people who want to showcase their individuality. They can be cut to any size or style and useful for your extra, but necessary information; such as accommodation, transportation etc. We published an article on Die Cuts last week. If you wish to read about die cuts in more detail, please follow this link- Die Cuts: The Most Customizable Cards.

Wedding Invitation Green

Wedding Save the Date

3. Using plastic or leather for wedding stationery is another exciting wedding trend. We offer Opaque White Plastic Postcards, in both the 4×6 and 5×7 sizes. Our Opaque White Plastic is made of a PET material, meaning it is environmentally friendly. It is durable, being both waterproof and tear proof. Depending on your design, Opaque White Plastic can be modern, futuristic or fun.
Clear Plastic Invitation

4. Texture is another big trend for those who wish to use paper choices. Textured paper, such as Scotland can give the organic, woodland feel which is popular for Fall. Heavy Linen has a woven pattern and will always  look upscale or outdoorsy. according to the feel of your wedding. Aquarelle  has a watercolor paper texture, which gives it a natural romantic feel and will work well to set an outdoorsy ambiance.
Wedding Invitations Embossing
Now, if you like the idea of the texture trend, but prefer a smooth paper stock, like Heavy Nouveau, we have an out of the box idea for you.  Add Embossing or Raised Ink to put a twist on the texture trend. Your guests will be able to see and feel the imprint of both these options on your stationery, giving you slight texture.

5. Foiling, especially Gold Foiling, is a classic and this style is still going strong. However, to the metallic color trend, other foiling colors such as Silver, Matte Silver and Bronze are rising in popularity as well. For those who have a different color scheme, but would still like to include foiling, MorningPrint also offers Pink, Blue, Red, Green, and Hologram. These last colors also fall in the category of another wedding trend, bold colors.

Wedding Invitation Foiling

*Special Note: You can combine embossing and foiling to create a raised and metallic effect. Since both finishing options are pressed on, we can do both at the same time and guarantee a beautiful outcome*

Geometric Wedding Invitations

6. Geometric designs, both modern and art deco are all the rage this season. Most use foiling to create their designs, and it looks beautiful. However, if you prefer a more subtle way to incorporate the geometric trend into your papers, we suggest considering Spot UV. Spot UV is a flat, reflective, transparent material that can be seen but not felt. Those interested in this special feature will need to order Standard Coated 14 pt Matte.

5. Please give us a brief history of your company and some of the services you provide.
I am a multidisciplinary freelance Graphic Designer working for a range of clients around the globe. Some of the Design work I focus on: Branding design, Packaging, Print , Digital, Illustration and Textile design.

6. Our favorite element of your card is that is the Die Cut shape. How did you come up with shape?
The name of My client “Brew Box Ltd” informed my decision to go with this diecut shape that in turn (when combined with the Spot UV) would look like a 3 Dimensional Box – which also eludes to what they sell – Brew Box hires out boutique portable bars for events and promotions . A Brew Box is a boutique, custom themed brew bar that can be delivered almost anywhere for any event.

7. What made you choose the Spot UV?
(see above!)

Brew Box photo 5
8.
You used around a few different font styles and a bold set of colors (orange-gold and black) without making the card look busy and distracting. In fact, it perfectly represents the client. What was your work and design process?
The Branding colours for brewbox are a mustard yellow/gold – to represent the golden colour of good old beer that is on tap from the actual brewbox, and I paired this with black which creates a nice contrast: Black communicates sophistication and adds substance and gravitis .

9.  What made you choose MorningPrint?
I stumbled across Morning Print Online, many years ago and decided to give them a try on a printing job for a client. Now I have been using Morning Print for 5+ years for all my customers printing needs.  I have had a great run with successful printing and exciting options of paper stock and techniques to choose from.

10. How was your experience with MorningPrint? Would you recommend us to others?
100% ! Morning Print are amazing, they have a fast turnaround time, exceptional print quality and also a huge range to choose from. (not to mention they have a great customer service – my emails are always promptly replied if I have questions.)

MorningPrint Product Feature: Spot UV

Do you want your business card to pop? A spot UV on MorningPrint’s Standard Coated 14pt matte can help you achieve something memorable. Spot UV is a clear coat or gloss that is applied over the card stock itself or printed areas. A UV light is used to cure the varnish which dries the card almost instantly, and then you get something remarkable!

ImageSpot UV is one of our favorite finishing options as it is clean and sleek giving cards a very modern and eye catching look.

Tip: Spot UV is not recommended for fully bled background as peeling can occur on the edges.

How to prepare files for Spot UV:

Spot UV is the only finishing option that allows a double side application, should you want spot UV on both sides you will need to include a black printing file and a back spot UV file.

All files should meet the following requirements:

Upload check list:

  •   Document is set to CMYK
  •   is at least 300dpi
  •   Convert all text to outlines: By converting fonts to outlines in programs like Illustrator and Photoshop, you will avoid font issues such as missing fonts or missing text. When converting text to outlines, the font becomes a “shape” and will look no different than its original font. If your fonts are not converted to outlines or rasterized, your design may not be viewed the way it was meant to be seen. Illustrator – Select All text – Type – Create Outlines / Photoshop – Select text layer – rasterize
  •   make sure your document is set to the right size (paper document size= 3.62” x 2.05” )

template

For spot UV you will need to have 4-6 files

  1. Front Complete – This will be the design in total of the front side
  2. Front Printing – This will be the area for ink. Keep in mind that Spot UV is a clear application so whatever color you want to show through the spot UV should be visible in this file. (Often times this file may look identical to the front complete, a case where it may differ is if the Spot UV is “blind” where it is not defined by a specific printing area).
  3. Front Spot UV– This will be the area for spot UV (clear coat), this area should be denoted in 100% black for positioning purposes.
  4. Back Complete – This will be the design in total of the backside
  5. Back Printing – This will be the area for ink. Keep in mind that Spot UV is a clear application so whatever color you want to show through the spot UV should be visible in this file. (Often times this file may look identical to the front complete, a case where it may differ is if the Spot UV is “blind” where it is not defined by a specific printing area).
  6. Back Spot UV– This will be the area for spot UV (clear coat), this area should be denoted in 100% black for positioning purposes.

*If you do not need Spot UV on the backside you just need a Back Printing file.

Interview:

Q : Jessica, briefly tell us about your business and its history:

A : I have been running a photography business for a few years and recently moved to another state and so decided to rebrand my business to better suit the market

Q : How did you select your designer for this project?

A: Well he is my husband! LOL And he also had just started his own design business so I knew I would get a great design and also a good deal.

Q : Where did the fox theme come from?

A: Our family shield features a fox so the theme runs through into our businesses.

Q : What direction did you give your designer? How did you like the final outcome of the project?

A: I explained that I wanted something simple and yet elegant, something not over the top but that would grab your attention.

Q : Bjorn, please tell us a little about yourself as a designer, and the services you offer:

A: I have been working in partnership with a very talented young designer by the name of Sebastian Pizarro for a while whom is now the other member of Fox Design Corp. We offer services to various niche markets like wedding stationary, greeting cards, and personalized stationary for individuals, along with logo and website design or a whole identity for a company as we have done for Jessica.

Q : Your design inspires us, what inspires you?

A: I think that the things that I admire most are always the simplest and yet convey a strong message with very little, whether it is words or just a few lines. This is mostly because when you start with an idea it is very cluttered and it is taking the time to remove the clutter that leaves you with something poignant and interesting.

Q : This order used a variety of options for this project, Spot UVFoilingRaised inkRounded Corners. How did you decide on the options?

A: MorningPrint offers many different printing options that I have been wanting to try for quite some time, so when the client said that she was happy to try anything we recommended it was hard not to try all of them LOL. I think that foiling gives things a sense of class along with rounded corners and the cards won’t bend in the corners and maintain a more pristine look. The raised ink and spot UV also add a texture that give the cards a real premium and tactile feel that also shows off the pattern we designed in a subtle way.

Q : When working with your clients, how do you get to the bottom of the style / design / products you will offer them?

A: I think as a designer it is important to understand the clients business, and therefore how the design will help the business stand out and also how they will use their stationary, in order to offer them the best solution. For example if my client is a plumber we might try a simpler design to make them look more upmarket instead of a tacky graphic and slogan and I would steer them more to plastic cards due to their water resistance and ease of cleaning in case they get them dirty. I would not try and steer them to something that may be more premium but that would not be particularly functional or useful for the business.

Q : Any tips for our clients to consider when they are creating their business cards?

A: Given the amount of cards people receive all the time it is worthwhile putting some effort in making something memorable in both design and feel so that you have more chances of potential clients keeping your cards and not throwing them away.

Q : Briefly tell us about your company, it’s history and what kind of services do you offer?

A : Bööm-Hop! rents a wide selection of inflatable games for private parties. Our social mission is to create employment among young people with disabilities.

Q : Your design inspires us, what inspires you?

A : Our agency, Rumeurs created this wonderful card. Our designer at the agency, Sandra Bakhache met our two criteria; we wanted a dynamic, young, fresh card, one that would effectively convey two very important messages (game rentals and employment integration). With her creative and passionate research, by considering many options and with her acute attention to detail, Sandra successfully met the challenge of designing a product that is intelligent and elegant. We are very proud.

Q : How did you come up with your concept for a folding business card?

A : Since we had two messages to integrate, our agency’s proposition to have a brochure-like card was unanimously accepted. It was a nice way to convey both messages and allowed us to give a voice to our principal characters: the princess and the pirate.

Q : The spot UV really highlights certain areas of your design, why did you decide to go with Spot UV?

A : Because we wanted a youthful, modern card, we opted for an original finish. To push the design, our agency suggested spot UV because of the selective sheen it offers, making it all the more visually interesting. The idea was to highlight the logo and to give life to the little eyes!

Q : How was your experience with creating a custom made business card with MorningPrint?

A : We were very pleased to work with MorningPrint. When we first made the request for a custom card, we were happily surprised to receive such an elaborate and detailed response. The email we got explained all the specifications, prices and even had a “how-to”, customized to our card size. The service was very professional.

Q : Did you experience any difficulties when using TheMorningPrint.com, or find anything to be inconvenient or inefficient? Any suggestions you can offer us to help make the customer experience better?

A : If I could offer any suggestions it would simply be to have a toll free phone number. Many thanks.
