Q : Jacqui briefly tell us and our readers a little about yourself, your company and the services you offer:
A : My name is Jacqui Ball and I am the owner of B:Creative Design Studio located in London, Ontario Canada. I provide personal and professional designs solutions for all my clients specializing in a wide range of graphic design solutions including but not limited to branding, corporate identity development, logo design, catalogue design, newsletter design, magazine design, Menu design, advertisements, flyers and Direct out design. With over 15 years of industry experience, from conception to inception, I deliver effective, clean and creative graphic design services. I am passionate about my profession and I love helping to bring people’s vision and ideas to life. I am truly fortunate to do what I love, and love what I do.
Q : As a designer you design for many clients and have so many ideas, how do you narrow down your ideas for your own card when you know the endless possibilities?
A: It’s true! Today there no limits to the endless options and the technological advances that allows us to bring our creative ideas to life. As a designer I am always very critical of any work that I do. I always want it to be the best and my business card was no exception. Knowing that my business card is a reflection of my abilities I knew it had to illustrate my creativity and have a WOW factor. That being said, after MANY different design ideas and having my designer friends critique my artwork – I decided that the uniqueness of the colour used, die-cut and UV Spot coating would represent myself and my business perfectly.
Q : Were you searching for Die-cut cards prior to creating these cards, or did the new MorningPrint die-cut card products strike your interest first?
A: Yes, I was searching for Die-cut cards as the ideas for my business cards was evolving. Personally, I love die-cut business cards because they are extremely unique. I think they stand out from the standard business card and provide the ability to convey your business to your potential customers in a stylish manner. I came across MorningPrint’s professional website and knew they could help me bring my ideas to life. MorningPrint had a huge selection of unique die-cut business card templates at affordable prices that I knew would work for me. The MorningPrint website was very user friendly and was the perfect choice for my design needs.
Q : You added a blind Spot UV to your die-cut card in a very effective way. Not only does it give a description of your services but adds a little something extra while keeping your card looking clean. How did you come up with this concept?
A: I had seen this effect used before and it added a little something special. I was looking for my card to look professional, unique but clean. I felt adding the Spot UV would give me the effect I was looking for. It is a subtle way that allows the client to see the other services I provide without cluttering up the card and making it look too busy.
Q : What information would you consider essential to have on a business card?
A: Aside from the essential name and contact information (phone and email) that is standard on most cards, I think that business card needs to have an identifiable logo, something that allows potential customers to easily recall your business and what services your business is able to offer.
Q : Any ideas for your next card? Different shape / stock / options you might be considering?
A: I have many ideas for my next cards. I have printed out the template selection for my clients and encourage them to step out of their comfort zones and create unique and fun die-cut business (with the help of MorningPrint of course 😉
Q : Any tips for our clients to consider when they are creating their business cards?
A: Hire a professional!! Graphic designers, like myself, have the experience in the industry to research industry trends and use this knowledge and ability to create the business cards that best displays the image the company represents. Give me, Jacqui Ball from B:Creative Design Studio a call and I’ll help you bring your ideas to life!
Q : How was your experience with MorningPrint? Did you experience any difficulties when using MorningPrint, or find anything to be inconvenient or inefficient?
A: I had a great first experience using MorningPrint. From their user friendly website, templates, ordering, to the print quality, I have nothing but positive things to say about their services. I would highly recommend using them as your printer on your next project!

Interview:

Q : Jessica, briefly tell us about your business and its history:

A : I have been running a photography business for a few years and recently moved to another state and so decided to rebrand my business to better suit the market

Q : How did you select your designer for this project?

A: Well he is my husband! LOL And he also had just started his own design business so I knew I would get a great design and also a good deal.

Q : Where did the fox theme come from?

A: Our family shield features a fox so the theme runs through into our businesses.

Q : What direction did you give your designer? How did you like the final outcome of the project?

A: I explained that I wanted something simple and yet elegant, something not over the top but that would grab your attention.

Q : Bjorn, please tell us a little about yourself as a designer, and the services you offer:

A: I have been working in partnership with a very talented young designer by the name of Sebastian Pizarro for a while whom is now the other member of Fox Design Corp. We offer services to various niche markets like wedding stationary, greeting cards, and personalized stationary for individuals, along with logo and website design or a whole identity for a company as we have done for Jessica.

Q : Your design inspires us, what inspires you?

A: I think that the things that I admire most are always the simplest and yet convey a strong message with very little, whether it is words or just a few lines. This is mostly because when you start with an idea it is very cluttered and it is taking the time to remove the clutter that leaves you with something poignant and interesting.

Q : This order used a variety of options for this project, Spot UVFoilingRaised inkRounded Corners. How did you decide on the options?

A: MorningPrint offers many different printing options that I have been wanting to try for quite some time, so when the client said that she was happy to try anything we recommended it was hard not to try all of them LOL. I think that foiling gives things a sense of class along with rounded corners and the cards won’t bend in the corners and maintain a more pristine look. The raised ink and spot UV also add a texture that give the cards a real premium and tactile feel that also shows off the pattern we designed in a subtle way.

Q : When working with your clients, how do you get to the bottom of the style / design / products you will offer them?

A: I think as a designer it is important to understand the clients business, and therefore how the design will help the business stand out and also how they will use their stationary, in order to offer them the best solution. For example if my client is a plumber we might try a simpler design to make them look more upmarket instead of a tacky graphic and slogan and I would steer them more to plastic cards due to their water resistance and ease of cleaning in case they get them dirty. I would not try and steer them to something that may be more premium but that would not be particularly functional or useful for the business.

Q : Any tips for our clients to consider when they are creating their business cards?

A: Given the amount of cards people receive all the time it is worthwhile putting some effort in making something memorable in both design and feel so that you have more chances of potential clients keeping your cards and not throwing them away.

MorningPrint is a CMYK gang printing service, which means we use a 4-color subtraction method of printing (there is no white ink). All white areas in your design will be left unprinted revealing the stock itself. If you need to express areas of white we recommend that you select the white plastic stock.

MorningPrint Hint: CMYK Color-Matching Tips

Color Matching

When you’re submitting your design for MorningPrint, it’s important to make sure you understand how our printing process works, whether you’re a designer or not. Understanding our printing process will not only help you with color matching your design to the type of service we offer, but it will give you a better understanding of whether or not our system works for your design and how you can create your files to be compatible with our system.

So where do we begin?

The first thing you’ll need to note is that MorningPrint is an offset CMYK gang printing service. I’m sorry, what?

Unlike Pantone, CMYK uses 4 colors – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black – to make other colors. Pantone uses the exact color every time, so if you’re looking for complete uniformity, hate to say it but we can already tell you right now you’re going to want to use a different printing service.

MorningPrint is also a gang printing company, meaning we will beat anyone up in a moment’s notice and not even be sorry about it because we’re the toughest printing company there is. Google it.

CMYK-raster-CMYKGang printing is a method of printing where multiple projects are printed together on the same giant sheet. How does this affect you? For one, if you’re looking for a proof of your work, you’re going to be in trouble. But if you are looking to get your order done as fast as possible with the highest quality out there, you’ve hit the jackpot.

The reason why we can’t provide you with a proof is the same reason why we’re able to work so efficiently: The minimum quantity we can print at one time is 200 cards, as opposed to digital printing which can print each card one by one. Our method is incredibly cost effective for you because it reduces labor costs and waste, which is why MorningPrint’s prices are always the lowest you’ll find.

If you are looking to get your order done as fast as possible with the highest quality out there, you’ve hit the jackpot.

How does this play into color-matching? Because gang printing uses a CMYK system, color balance is difficult to maintain from card to card. Many projects are placed side-by-side at one time, so it’s harder to get custom color and custom cuts that are exactly the same every time.

This doesn’t mean that you’re going to somehow get a square cut and a rectangle cut on your same business card order – most times the difference isn’t even noticeable, especially to the untrained eye. Still, it’s important to note that no two cards are printed and cut exactly the same.

What you absolutely need to understand before placing your order with MorningPrint:

  • MorningPrint (just like all gang printing companies) is unableto guarantee 100% color match. If you are looking for exact precise coloring you may not be able to achieve this CMYK offset printing. We’d hate to see you go, but we’d hate to not be able to give you the results you’re looking for even more #realtalk.
  • Even if you are using a CMYK book/chart the color can still vary because there are an insane number of variables that will also affect it. For example: different card stocks absorb colors differently. Our Scotland card stock will absorb color differently than our Clear Plastic card stock because of thickness, coating and texture. That’s the way it is.
  • It’s important to note that what you see on your computer monitor may change once it’s in print. For example, we cannot compensate forRGB values you may be using in your design and viewing on your screen.
  • Color results can shift using the same design when the design is printed at different times as weather and other external factors can affect the outcome.
  • Colors printed on the front and back of the card may have a shift even if the same value is used as they are run at separate times.
  • Raised InkSpot UV may shift the color of the printed area

What do we suggest so you get the finished product you’re looking for?

For starters, create your files using CMYK values. But even then, it’s important to note that what you see isn’t always what you get. Your screen displays everything in RGB so even if your files is set to CMYK it can look different on the screen.mppic

  • Use a CMYK chart as a reference but if using offset gang printing you have to leave room for slight shifts. Remember, this is not just a MorningPrint standard, it’s an industry standard.

INTERVIEW:

Q : Briefly tell us about your company, it’s history and what kind of services do you offer?

A : KM Designs is a freelance graphic design company I created in 2010. After college I decided that I needed to set myself apart from other designers and do my own freelance work. My services include branding, fliers, collateral, business cards, brochures, and website layout.

Q : Your design inspires us, what inspires you?

A : My inspiration comes from minimalism, negative space, and contrasting colors.

Q : You added spot UV to the front of your design, why did you select this finishing?

A : I selected this finishing because I wanted to add an element that would stand out from other business cards.

Q : We love the simple bold design as well as the color scheme of your card, how did you decide on this pallet / design?

A : Less is more and I wanted to keep it simple yet loud. The contrasting colors are eye catching but the design remains straightforward.

Q : Any tips for our clients to consider when they are creating their business cards?

A : Avoid busy artwork and be straight to the point.

Q : Did you experience any difficulties when using TheMorningPrint.com, or find anything to be inconvenient or inefficient?

A : No, the website is easy to navigate and the directions are clear.

Tip:

Rich Black

Rich Black is used to refer to a mixture containing all four CMYK colors to produce a much darker, deeper black on press than can be achieved by using black ink alone. Rich black is not recommended for small text but rather backgrounds and large areas of black.

MorningPrint has selected the CMYK breakdown that works best with our systems and recommend to use this CMYK calibration value for large solid black areas of black :

Paper Card/C30% M30% Y20% K100%. Plastic Card/C10% M0% Y0% K100%

We do not recommend using CMYK values higher than these. Using too much ink will result the final print to be muddy.

Q : Briefly tell us about your company, it’s history and what kind of services do you offer?

A : My ‘company’ is actually just myself! I am a freelance graphic designer, specializing in print design. Mainly I work on branding, business cards, brochures, editorial design and publication projects.

Q : How did you come up with the name for your company?

A : My last name is Potter, and I’ve always been called Miss Potter by so many people, so I knew I wanted to have that as my brand name. However due to the film about Beatrix Potter being called ‘Miss Potter’, lots of domain names are already taken. So I needed to come up with a friendly word to add on to make the brand name unique, and ‘hello’ was what I ended up choosing.

Q : Your design inspires us, what inspires you?

A : Usually just getting outside (hopefully with my camera) and looking around, which I must admit I wish I was doing more often these days. I like to sketch with old fashioned pencil and paper, I often find ideas flow better that way.

Q : You added raised ink to the front of your design , why did you select this finishing?

A : Being a print designer, I wanted the card to have a tactile element to it so when I handed it over the recipient would immediately feel it was something special. The beauty and feel of print is so important, the way your business card looks and feels says a lot about your brand. You only get one chance to make a good first impression!

Q : Your card has a simple, clean, yet effective design, how did you come up with this? Did you free hand any of the elements on the front of your design?

A : The design is an adaptation of my logo (you can see it at hellomisspotter.com) which I blew up and played around with to get a graphic design for the front of the card. I drew all the shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I chose a speech bubble for my logo because design is all about communication, and more obviously to link to the ‘hello’ in the brand name.

Q : We love the color scheme of your card, how did you decide on this pallet?

A : The colour took a really long time for me to settle on! While I was designing the card I probably went through at least 10 different colour-ways before I arrived at this one. In the end it came down to 2 things: I really wanted a bright colour (because I love colour!) and I wanted a colour that wasn’t too feminine. The colour I chose is also a colour that I am wearing a lot at the moment, so I feel it reflects my personality quite well.

Q : Any tips for our clients to consider when they are creating their business cards?

A : I try and get my clients to really think about what they want someone receiving their business card to think about their business. You can have a really great first meeting with someone, and make a really great impression, but your card is the piece of you that person takes away with them. The object they refer to when contacting you again. The quality and personality of your business needs to be reflected in your cards!

Q : Did you experience any difficulties when using TheMorningPrint.com, or find anything to be inconvenient or inefficient?

A : The only thing I wish MorningPrint offered (which would make them darn near perfect!) would be a spot colour printing service rather than just straight cmyk. But you know, that’s just a wish list thing, not a must have! Overall I found the service incredibly easy to use and delivery to the other side of the world was very efficient.

Q : Briefly tell us about your company, it’s history and what kind of services you offer?

A : After I had my first child I quit my graphic design job to be a stay at home mom. Although staying at home and taking care of my children was a wonderful blessing, I found it hard to find a creative outlet. I discovered birthdays to be a great way to take care of that creative itch. Designing invitations and parties for my children soon turned into designing for my friends as well. A dear friend of mine encouraged me to start selling my invitations on Etsy (lemonademoments.etsy.com). It took some convincing but much to my surprise and delight Lemonade Moments immediately took off.

Q : Where did the name Lemonade Moments come from?

A : For most of us, lemonade is a drink infused with nostalgia. Just one taste can take us back to lazy summer days when life was carefree and full of joy. My hope is that my designs are the first step to achieving those sweet and refreshing

lemonade moments‘.

Q : Your design inspires us, what inspires you?

A : My inspiration can come in the most random places. I have absolutely no control over when or how it happens. Which is incredibly frustrating and not always conducive to productivity. Grin! I have a deep love for typography. Which started in an old school type setting/press class I took in college. You will often find me snapping pictures of anything with great typography. I get inspirations from vintage posters, packaging, signs and old advertisements. I love the design era from the 20’s-50’s.

Q : You added raised ink to the front of your design as well as rounded corners, why did you select these finishing?

A : I knew I wanted my business card to stand out. I think the linen paper, rounded corners and raised ink really helped with that.

Q : We love the color scheme of your card, how did you decide on this pallet?

A : Well, that was the easiest part. Yellow has always been my favorite color and thankfully also the color of lemonade. It is very cheerful and playful. The characteristics I want to associate with my invitations. It also happens to be a color that is hard to read. I knew I had to choose a background that would compliment without dulling it. Allowing the yellow to be more noticed. I think the neutral taupe does this well.

Q : Any tips for our clients to consider when they are creating their business cards?

A : Make it worth remembering. There are a lot of average business cards floating around. Make sure yours is unique and catchy so that it will grab your audience’s attention.

Q : Did you experience any difficulties when using TheMorningPrint.com, or find anything to be inconvenient or inefficient? Any suggestions you can offer us to help make the customer experience better?

A : No, it was very easy to work with Morning Print. Thank you so much! You have a repeat customer here.

Q : Briefly tell us about Audacious-Design, it’s history and what kind of services do you offer?

A : Audacious Design is my personal graphic design freelance business that I started only 2 years ago. I offer my clients creative and intuitive UI/UX design and branding/rebranding services for all their print and digital needs. Having extensive experience art directing multiple e-commerce sites, I am happy to provide my clients valuable resources; improving ROI and ensuring cost and time efficiency.

Q : Can you tell us where the name Audacious-Design originated from, or what the meaning behind it is?

A : I chose the word “Audacious” because I felt it was fitting for the dynamic, creative, intuitive, and edgy design I produce.

Q : Your design inspires us, what inspires you?

A : I am inspired by people who are resourceful, independent and successful. Being part of such a competitive market, my business is what I make of it, and I couldn’t be happier!

Q : The front side of your card is a simple clean concept with a great effect. Why did you decide to select foiling? Can you tell us a little bit about your thought process behind creating your business card?

A : My company has a strong emphasis on branding so I wanted something simple, elegant, yet dynamic. By utilizing the foil on top of a bright orange background, I was able to balance my dynamic youth with elegance and sophistication.

Q : We understand this was your first order with MorningPrint, how was the experience?

A : I could not be happier with the customer service, quality, turnaround, and affordability MorningPrint has to offer. Having used Overnightprints, Vistaprints, and local printers, MorningPrint has impressed me the most by offering unique printing services as such affordable rates! Trust me, having lived in Shanghai, China for a more than a year, I know how affordable printing really is, and unfortunately, not many people realize how ripped off they are getting from other companies who quote way too high.

Q : Did you experience any difficulties when using TheMorningPrint.com, or find anything to be inconvenient or inefficient? Any suggestions you can offer us to help make the customer experience better?

A : When I had a question regarding my order, I received a prompt and reassuring reply from customer service that put all my worries at ease. Fantastic company and highly recommended for all designers and businesses.
